Yesterday, at 12:01 am, I watched District 9. Knowing that I am one of the few having already seen it (although, for my surprise, the theater was almost full), I will take extra care on not spoiling the movie.
If you haven’t seen the trailer for District 9, watch it, but don’t explore anything else. This was all I knew ahead of time about the movie (besides from some trivia on the director), and I can assure you it gives you a great experience. As you can see from the trailer, aliens show up on earth, and are feared and segregated. Sadly, that’s a believable scenario, and I wish we were better hosts, or at least to have learned better. The smart, but yet chilling ads on buses, would play with segregation’s past, ruling them as “only for humans.”
I won’t go farther on the plot, but I can guarantee that as it unfolds, you’ll discover that this movie makes some points on human nature, but is still able to entertain you. A lot. The music is similar to that of other movies set in such continent, but is as emotive and appropriate as it always is. If you don’t know which continent I’m talking about, leave it like that. You will find it refreshing for this type of movie to be set there. The setting is well crafted and you’ll find the richness of details amusing, to say the least.
There are some issues with the unfolding of some events in the plot, and I’m sure many scriptwriters will feel offended by them, but in the greater scope of things, I can forgive these issues. The experience was incredibly entertaining, while still managing to inspire some deeper thoughts.
The only warnings I would make are that, first, it is still an alien movie. However, even if that’s “not your thing,” I say you should still watch it. Second, there is a lot of blood and gore. You can be sure to come out soaked and dripping. If you can’t take it, you’ll be missing a great movie, but I’m sure it isn’t the first one you miss because of that.
Come on, it’s not that bloody. And you should also mention that the weapons are copied straight from Unreal.
